Some Herbs Used For Medicinal Purposes

Many people add herbs to their gardens, for culinary uses, but did you know that many of them can be used for their medicinal properties? We look at the major medicinal herbs and their curative properties.

Garlic:
Natural antibiotic
Used to ward off coughs and colds
Helps control gastritis
Good for poor blood circulation
Very effective in children’s ear problems
1 clove a day will significantly lower blood pressure
Lowers cholesterol levels
Removes excess glucose from bloodstream
Helpful with diabetes
Good for anxiety attacks
Not to be used if suffering from excema

Parsley:
Very good for people suffering from anaemia
Helps to build up iron reserves in the body, gradually and naturally aids in digestive           troubles
Freshens the breath (especially after taking garlic)
Don’t use dried parley, as it has lost much of it’s medicinal properties
Quick solution for hangovers
Boosts the immune system
Don’t eat when pregnant, as it can bring on contractions
Good for those who have arthritis
Full of Potassium, which feeds the muscles and the heart
Detoxifies the body
Cleans the liver and kidneys

Basil:
Fresh leaves have mild sedative properties, that help with gastritis and stomach aches (mix 1 Tablespoon, with 1/2 pint water and add honey for taste, sip slowly)
Use leaves in steam bath, or as inhalation, to decongest sinuses and relieve headaches
Leaves used in paste, reduce inflammation and bruising
Very good for insect stings and bites and on grazes and scratches
Good as a natural sedative
Use as anti spasmodic
Natural, non toxic tranquilizer

Sage:
Excellent for sore throats, gums, mouth ulcers and tonsillitis
Fresh leaves rubbed on teeth, act as mouth deodorant
Strengthens gums
Great as a gargle (stew 100 gms of fresh leaves in 1 pint boiling water and allow to cool)
Use the above mix for headlice (wash hair first, then apply mix and leave to dry)
Use as health tea

Rosemary:
Wonderful stimulant
Use as tonic
Use for coughs and colds and general run down feeling
Revive lost appetite
Revitalise the mind
Good when rubbed on aching limbs and for varicose veins
      (For all the above applications, mix up the tonic as follows, add 2 tablespoons fresh    Rosemary, or 1 tablespoon dried to 1 Litre sweet wine. Slowly bring to the boil, then leave for 3 days to infuse. Strain and bottle for use)

Chives:
Rich source of natural iron
Good for the blood
Used as an antidote and haemostatic

Bay:
Relaxes the body
Stimulates the mind
Place 4 or 5 fresh leaves in your bath, to cleanse the body
Chew bayleaf, before meals, to promote salivary excretion
Massage mix of bodyoil and Essential Oil of Bay, into tired feet

Thyme:
Antiseptic for sore throats, when used as seasoning in food
Lowers cholesterol levels
Good as nerve tonic and for anxiety
Add to bath water, to stimulate blood circulation

Marjoram:
Stimulates body bile

Borage:
A natural alternative, to expesive Evening Primrose Oil and contains Gamma-Linolenic Acid, which relieves menopausal problems
Fresh leaves rich in Potassium, which combats inflammation and stimulates adrenal glands, which in turn, aids the body in making cortisone
High in Sulphur, which arrests hair loss

Mint:
Mint tea helps in digestion after a rich meal

Fennel:
Aids in digestion
Stops flatulence
For immediate relief from bloating, cook up a spoonful of Fennel seeds, in a cup of milk, for 10 minutes and drink while hot
