Many people use plants, like herbs for cooking, seasoning and enhancing the flavour and fragrance of certain main dishes, like eggs and stews. What they don’t realize is how many uses there are for herbs in everyday ailments. This chart is simply a quick guide, which you can either use in your kitchen, or hang up somewhere, for further reference. Some of the more common plants are listed below, but before you use them, be sure to read a bit more about them.
Aloe Vera
This can be used for minor burns. Keep a potted aloe, on your kitchen shelf. Aloe Vera care is simple as it only needs weekly watering. For minor burns, snip off a thick leaf and slit it open, use the gel and apply it to the burn. It works!
Cranberry
This is good for your kidneys, and prevents bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall, for long enough to cause an infection.
Echinacea
This is used mainly for colds and flu. The root of this daisy like flower, enhances your immune system and offers relief, from upper respiratory infections. Echinacea reduces symptoms and accelerates recovery. Echinacea is available in teas and in capsule form.
Garlic
This can be used as an antibiotic. From ancient times, through World War I, garlic has been used to treat the wounded. Toady, antibiotics are more potent and easier to take. If you are concerned about ulcers, just use more garlic in your diet. Many people use garlic in cooking, for taste and health reasons.
Ginkgo
This can be used for Alzheimer’s disease. It is safe, but it has anti-coagulant properties, so increased bruising is possible. Ginkgo improves blood flow to the genitals and helps improve male impotency.
Hibiscus
This is the trumpet-shaped, tropical flower, that can be used for Hypertension (high blood pressure). High blood pressure, requires professional care. It is better to ask your doctor, about adding hibiscus to your treatment plan.
Lavender
These flowers are an age-old remedy, for anxiety. You can use a handful of lavender flowers, or buy lavender oil and simply add several drops, to your bath. This gives a soothing effect and will help to reduce anxiety, or stress. Ingesting lavender oil, is toxic soit is best to keep it away from children.
Licorice
Better known as a black sweet, this can help a sore throat. Add a teaspoon of chopped, or powdered licorice root, to a beverage tea. You will feel relief, almost immediately.
Peppermint
Most people also think of the sweet. Taking peppermint, will help to aid indigestion. If you grow peppermint, you can just pick a few leaves and make up a tea.
St. John’s Wort
Very good, for mild depression. St. John’s Wort works just as well as Prozac and Zoloft, but with fewer side effects. Depression requires professional care and is better to ask you doctor about St. John’s Wort.
Although this guide of garden plant and herb usage, in place of regular medicines, is interesting and offers quick fixes and although you will find help, for many common ailments on it, it is always good advice, to consult a doctor and talk to him, or her, about taking home remedies, instead of his medications.
