These days, when everybody is trying to do their bit for the eco system, chemicals for insect and disease control, are frowned upon. If you hate the thought of storing and using these chemicals, if you want to save money, or if you are concerned for the well being of children and pets, then you will be pleased to know, that several simple remedies for control of these insects and diseases, can be mixed up, using nothing more than common household ingredients.
For Ants, Termites, Snails, Slugs, and Weeds that love acidic conditions, they can all be treated very effectively, by using a simple mixture. Sprinkle 125g (1/2 cup) of agricultural lime, obtainable from your garden store, per square metre of infected area. Agricultural lime is a natural mined product and therefore is eco friendly. For ants with a sweeter tooth, mix some icing sugar with Borax, in a one to one ratio. They will love the icing sugar and they will take their spoils down into the nest. This is good, as it kills off the whole colony.
A mix of Basil tea, will control a wide range of Fungi and Insects. Pour 2 litres of boiling water over 200 ml of Basil leaves and stems. Allow to cool and then spray affected plants, with the mixture.
A Garlic spray will control Mildew, Rust and other Fungal diseases. Simply crush 125 g of Garlic and add to 500ml of water. Store in the fridge, until required. Dilute this mix with water, in a 1 part mixture, to 10 parts of water ratio and apply to your plants.
Another cure for Mildew and Red Spiders and Caterpillars, is to mix 1L of milk, with 15 L of water and spray the affected areas, with this mix, every ten days.
Fruit Flies and otherwise damaged plants, can be sprayed with a Comfrey mix. Comfrey is a Nitrogen promoter and strengthens plant growth. Just add 1L of boiling water, to either 2cups of fresh Comfrey, or 2 1/2 tablespoons of dried Comfrey. Infuse for 10 minutes and then strain and dilute, in the ratio of 1 part Comfrey mix to 4 parts water. Spray this mixture on affected areas.
Another easy to make spray, using harmless household ingredients, can be used on plants that are struggling. This mixture also helps plants to resist Fungal diseases. Take half a spade full of matured Compost, preferably of the organic type and mix with 10 L of water. Allow to stand for 5 to 7 days, strain and spray the mix on to plants. Be sure to reach lower areas and roots.
Control over soft bodied Insects, such as Caterpillars and Maggots is easy with this mixture. These are again, simple household ingredients. Crush 4 hot Chillis, with 1 small Onion and a clove of Garlic. Add to 2 Litres of water and bring to the boil. Leave to stand for 2 days, then strain and spray.
To get rid of Aphids, White Fly and White Scale, you can also make up a simple mix, from common ingredients found in your house. Simply dissolve 2 teaspoons of Dishwashing liquid, in 5 L of water and spray on to plants.
A simple remedy for Red Spider Mites is to dissolve 1 cup of sugar, in 5 L of hot water. Leave to cool and spray on to affected areas.
As you will see from the above suggestions, it is easy to combat garden pests and diseases, using nothing more than simple ingredients found in the average household. These are harmless, common, easy to find and eco friendly.
