I love hearing from my readers. We all share a common love - the biggest hobby in the world. We are all keen gardeners. It is unfortunate, that there are always those devious characters, on the internet, who spoil things for others. They leave hate mail, spam, links to porn sites and so on and it becomes tedious, to have to sort these comments and delete them. Fortunately, I haven’t really had this problem, but my husband has. Anyway, we are happy gardeners and let’s stay happy.
Some readers have been very interested in the last couple of articles on the medicinal properties of plants and this has elicited quite a few questions. It seems everyone is becoming more health conscious. I will try to get some more information on herbs and other plants that have practical uses. If you like, I will also try to get some more information on organics, as well. In one of my more recent articles, I have introduced you to a very good book on household remedies. Keep an eye out for that one.
Some readers have questioned a tricky subject - that of relevance and of spelling. Well, you see, I’m in the middle here. It becomes difficult to decide. I am South African, but I realize that most of my readers are not. If I write an article on SA plants and think it is more relevant to South Africans, then I spell our normal way. If the subject is more American and will appeal more to Americans, then I use their spelling. It gets tricky with the article sites. They scan the article and as far as they are concerned, we can’t spell properly. So, it becomes a bit of a catch 22 situation. I was even told that Google and the other search engines look at our titles, keywords and content for referencing. If I use SA spelling, they just assume it was a mistake and ignore those words. So I end up being penalised, for wrong spelling.
The other factor that is difficult to cater to, is geographic location. If I write an article on gardening, then I write as a gardener in the southern hemisphere and I refer to winter. If the article is more relevant to the US, or the UK, then they are in the northern hemisphere. They experience different seasons to us and the Americans use the term “fall.”
It is awkward and I try my best to alleviate problems, but really, at the end of the day, we are gardeners aren’t we? We are not professors of English, or meteorologists, or climatologists, or anything fancy. We are just gardenerologists.
You know what I mean and I’m sure you will just convert the text to local conditions. I’m sure it is not really that big a deal. You asked and I gave you honest answers, so let’s just help one another, share our passion and get on with our plantiology.
