Simple Plastic Greenhouses

Many beginner greenhouse gardeners will probably want to start with a greenhouse gardening kit. Most of these kits feature polycarbonate, or plastic greenhouse panels, to construct the building. There are many styles of plastic greenhouses available, for every level of gardening experience and need. Kits are the best choice, in choosing a first plastic greenhouse. There are kits for small portable structures, small limited heat structures and larger, year round growing structures available.

Beginner Gardeners.
For people who are just beginning to garden, a small plastic greenhouse, with an inexpensive PVC, or aluminium frame, would be a good choice. The price for greenhouses of this size and style, are usually under $300 dollars.

Location and climate are important factors to consider, when deciding where to construct a plastic greenhouse. Depending on the size, a building permit could be required, generally speaking, but if the structure is smaller than a storage building (or about the same size) then a building permit shouldn’t be required.

The plastic greenhouse should be placed in an area, where it will receive the most sun, during most of the year, for the longest part of each day. This means a place on the gardener’s property, with full sun and no shade, or as close to those conditions as possible.

In these small starter greenhouses, most gardeners will want to start with around eight total plants, until they become accustomed to greenhouse gardening. The polycarbonate plastic greenhouse panels, are a good quality insulator, in double thickness and a close second, to glass panels.

Wintering Plants In A Plastic Greenhouse.
A plastic greenhouse’s garden, is not limited by the material it is made out of. If using the greenhouse as a place to winter plants, upkeep is simple.  Simply transferring plants from an outdoor garden, into pots and finally into the greenhouse, is all the extra maintenance that is necessary.

Choosing the best pot for a plastic greenhouse plant, is important, because they are kept indoors and at warmer temperatures, so a porous material, such as terra cotta, or wood makes a nice container for greenhouse plants.

Most plants and small trees will grow well in pots.  As long as the plants are properly watered and fertilized, they will thrive during the winter months, almost as well, as if it were summer.  Potted plants will generally need more water, than in-ground plants and more nutrients, as they don’t have the surrounding garden soils, to pull water, or nutrients from.

The greenhouse need not be elaborate, or very big. Careful usage of the space available and tiered shelves will provide sufficient room for many plants. Work out carefully what you want to grow and how much space they will take. Then calculate how many shelves you will need and then you can calculate the total required space of the greenhouse. If you live in warmer areas, you only need a simple greenhouse, but if subjected to colder weather, you may need to spend a bit, on a more elaborate system.

Several types of plastic greenhouse are available commercially, but it is not that difficult to build a simple plastic greenhouse yourself. Use lightweight steel rod, or plastic conduit piping, or even timber to construct the framework and then clad it with plastic sheet. Ask the kids to help you. They know how to make tents!

Many greenhouse gardeners practice hydroponics in their greenhouses. For more on hydroponic gardening, get this book. The Hydroponic Gardener is a great guide to hydroponic gardening.
