You can create a natural, wildlife sanctuary in your garden, where many birds, insects and small mammals will take up residence. Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, right outside your window. This can actually reduce the costs of garden maintenance, by allowing nature to control herself.
Creatures regarded as pests, by gardeners, like aphids, caterpillars, snails and worms, will be kept in check by birds, lizards and frogs. A great variety of creatures, of all shapes, colours and sizes will fill the ecological niches and feed off various food supplies, such as nectar, leaf litter, or leaf mould, decaying wood, berries and so on, but will not cause permanent damage.
Plant eating creatures will in turn become food for lizards, chameleons, birds and the praying mantis. Not only is this very educational for children, but it also creates a natural, healthy ecosystem.
Plants should be chosen with care. Make sure they have the soil and climatic conditions, that they prefer. An assortment of plants, such as low growing groundcover, nectar rich flowers and shrubs and trees should be mixed in your garden, to provide everything that your natural friends could want. There should be open spaces for creatures that like room and bushy, overgrown areas for others, that like to hide.
Provide posts, or old stumps and branches, for birds and leaves, petals and twigs will provide cover and food for insects, that then become food for the lizards, geckos and frogs. Choose flowers that provide nectar for insects and birds, such as aloes, watsonias and kniphofias. Plants that produce edible seeds, wild fruit, berries and nesting materials, should also be selected.
You don’t really need indigenous plants and trees, for these creatures, as they will adapt and can feed off exotic plants just as easily, but obviously the indigenous varieties will be more natural, hardier, easier to find and the natural choice of the creatures.
Refrain from using fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals, as these will poison some creatures and upset the natural balance of the ecosystem. Just allow nature to run it’s course. You can always use natural remedies which are harmless.
Use compost, rather than fertilizer, as this enriches the soil and provides food for microscopic organisms, which then become food for other creatures. Provide a water source which will attract creatures looking to drink and to bathe. Use a pond, fountain, stream or something that can be built to look natural, with rocks and branches and so on. Many creatures will use this facility and will be encouraged to stay.
You will be the envy of your friends. When they come to visit, make a point of showing them the birds, butterflies, squirrels and all your other garden friends. This is cost effective, a natural way of gardening and very rewarding.
