First off, a very Happy Easter to all readers. Many people have commented on how early Easter is, this year. I remember back in 1984, we had just moved on to our old farm, in Winterton, and had friends up for the Easter weekend.
We all went to bed and awoke to the first snowfall of the year. That was quite a bit later than 21st March, although I can’t remember exactly when, but think it was almost month end, so yes mid March is early.
I tried to find out how the dates for Easter were determined and why it fell so early this year. The following is the explanation given me. I’m not sure if this applies everywhere else in the world, but it definitely applies to South Africa. Obviously the equinox referred to, is opposite in the northern hemisphere.
Easter is always the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the spring equinox, which is March 20. This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar, that the Hebrew people used, to identify Passover, which is why it moves around, on the Roman calendar.
Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) than it is this year, but that is very rare.
This year is the earliest Easter any of us will see, for the rest of our lives. Only the most elderly of us (95 and older) may have seen it this early, before. And none of us will ever live to see it a day earlier.
The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913. The next time it will be a day earlier (March 22) will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now).
The last time it was on March 22 was in 1918. So, nobody alive today has, or ever will see it any earlier than this year! That makes this Easter very special. Enjoy it!
