Growing Tomatoes In A Greenhouse

Many people would like to grow different types of vegetables indoors, so they use different methods, but a greenhouse is one of the best and most convenient of these methods. This is how you can grow many types of vegetables, in controlled circumstances, under one roof. The advanced techniques, used in a greenhouse, are probably the best and easiest way of growing vegetables, for your daily use.

Tomatoes are one of the favourite types of vegetable-fruits, around the world. For many gardeners and farmers, it is a most successful crop, that can give an excellent return. Often, many people refer to cucumbers and lettuces, when thinking of  an indoor garden, such as a greenhouse, but tomatoes are one of the easiest and most profitable to grow, in an indoor garden. In the market place, demand for high quality tomatoes is always high, which is due to a high contain of protein and other essential minerals, contained in the tomato.

Growing tomatoes is not a big challenge for any grower, but to grow high quality tomatoes, is a bit more difficult, if proper methods are not used.

Before you start with actual production, it is important to choose an appropriate tomato cultivar. Tomato demand basically depends on their size, shape, and colour. The main advantage of using high quality cultivars, is the total freedom from cracks, low disease resistance, and low production yields.

A better greenhouse tomato cultivar, grows to almost 30 – 40 feet, for a 10 month season. Some modern species of tomatoes are more disease resistant, than the older ones, so you can have a higher production level and simple pollination methods. There are two major cultivar categories available in market. One is Beefsteak and the other is Cluster.

Beefsteak category cultivars can produce large tomatoes, that can weigh 6 - 8 ounces each. Other famous cultivars include Jumbo, Laura, Caruso and Trend. All these cultivars can be grown successfully in a greenhouse and can produce sufficient amounts of fruit, of a high quality.

Two cultivars, from this category, the Trust and the Math, are susceptible to small cracks on their surface. You can avoid such problems, by carefully controlling the greenhouse temperature and moisture level.

The cluster category is much more popular nowadays. These vine - ripened tomatoes are known by different names, such as cluster tomatoes, truss tomatoes, cluster harvested tomatoes, and also vine tomatoes. They are the most widely grown tomato crop, around the world. Cluster tomatoes are fairly similar to the beefsteak category tomatoes. The only difference is that the plant is taller and the tomatoes grow in cluster form. These tomatoes posses a high quality of shape, colour and taste and have an excellent shelf life.

You can use any of these crop types, to grow tomatoes in your greenhouse, but for best results, you need to be careful and watch the greenhouse environment constantly, namely the temperature and humidity, and you will also need to spray pesticides regularly.

There are various other plants that can also be grown in a greenhouse. These include flowers, cacti, orchids and ferns to name but a few.
