It is amazing how many people are trying to keep away from using chemicals in their homes and gardens and trying to use harmless homemade solutions instead. I have run several articles on this subject and still get regular recipes and solutions sent to me. Here are a few new home remedies for pests.
Soap Spray Insecticide
Mix 1 Tsp detergent based liquid soap, or dishwashing liquid with 1 gallon of water, in your sprayer. Apply well to top and bottom of leaves. Re-apply once weekly, or after rain.
Garlic Spray Insecticide
Combine in your blender, 1 whole garlic bulb and 2 cups water. Mix on high speed, until garlic is finely pureed. Put in a storage container and set aside, for a day. Strain pulp and then mix the liquid with 1 gallon of water, in your sprayer. Spray tops and bottoms of leaves thoroughly and thereafter weekly and after rains.
Fungicide Sprays – Treats powdery mildew and other fungus
Mix 1 gallon water, 3 Tsp baking soda, 1 tsp dishwashing liquid and only 1 Tsp bleach – no more! Place in your sprayer. Spray all areas on the affected plant, or if really bad, remove leaves, or part of the plant. Apply sparingly to unaffected areas, as the bleach can harm the plant.
Hot pepper spray- Repels rabbits, deer and other nibblers.
Combine 6-10 hot peppers and 2 cups of water, in your blender, and mix on high speed, for 1 - 2 minutes. Pour into a storage jar, with a lid and set aside for 1 day. Strain through cheesecloth, then add this liquid to 1 quart water, that is already in the spray bottle. Spray well weekly and after rains.
To keep slugs at bay, sprinkle course salt directly on them – they will become history. A bowl of beer wherever they can climb in also works well and they will die very soon.
Planting marigolds in between veggies and other flowers, may help to repel nematodes.
Plant basil in pots, around patios, or sitting areas outside, to repel flying nuisances, such as gnats, flies and mosquitoes. Water the basil plant, before having visitors, if you’re going to sit outside and this will enhance the aroma. One can also crush the leaves in ones hands and rub the oily excretion over your skin. This apparently keeps these pests away from you.
Planting Nasturtiums amongst your vegetables, will keep away aphids and give the veggy patch a burst of colour.
If one throws away pesticides and only uses natural resources, we will have the pleasure of butterflies, dragonflies, lady birds, bees and many other visitors to our summer gardens again. The chemicals are very harmful to our health, our pets and the bird life in our gardens.
There are thousands of plants that can treat just as many ailments. What is so amazing about herbal remedies, is their close association to our modern medicines. Most of our current “wonder drugs” have a botanical connection. Sadly, many of those medicines contain much more than simple botanicals. Stuffed with chemicals, allergens and who knows what else, we are fast becoming a medicated society.
If you are sick and tired of being over-medicated, you can take control and start a journey toward natural herbal remedies. After all, natural remedies served the human race very well before we became so smart! 47 Household Remedies is written just for you, the person who is sick and tired of being over-medicated.
