In this article, we start with reviews of some of the summer varieties of bulb plants. As with the winter section, we start off with a few that are indigenous to South Africa.
In the previous 3 articles we looked at the various types of winter bulb plants.
Okay, some of the more common varieties of bulb plants that are planted in spring, for summer flowering and are indigenous to South Africa are:
1, Crocosmia
This variety likes growing in pots. They are summer varieties, so are best planted from mid September to October. These will flower from mid December through to March and are typically a light orange in color.
When planting, space apart by about 10 cm (4 ins) and about 4 cm deep (3 ins). They grow quite tall, at around 70 to 90 cms ( 28 to 36 inches).
2, Zantedeschia
These are often referred to as Arum Lilies and come in 21 varieties. Plant the bulbs 5 cm (2 ins) beneath the soil and 20 cm apart (8 ins). Plant in semi shade, between August and September. They will flower from November to January and reach heights of about 50 cm (20 ins).
3, Nerine
Plant these bulbs in semi shaded areas, between mid September and October. Plant the bulbs, with the neck just above the soil level and space them about 10 cm apart (4 ins). They reach about 50 cm in height (20 ins) and the white and pink blooms appear from January to March.
4, Galtonia
You can plant these bulbs in the full sun. Bury the bulbs about 5 cm below the soil (2 ins) and about 15 cm apart (6 ins). Plant these bulbs from August to September and they will flower from December to January. They reach a height of about 100 cm (40 inches) and grow well in pots.
5, Gladiolus
These bulbs like full sun and should be planted from September to October, at a depth of 10 cm (4 ins) and 15 cm apart (6 ins). They grow tall, at heights of around 100 cm (40 ins). They flower in a range of different colours, from November through to March.
6, Eucomis
Also known as the Pineapple Flower, this bulb likes anything from full sun to partly shaded conditions and reaches a height of around 150 cm (60 inches). They should be planted between mid September and October, with the tops of the bulbs just under the soil and spaced 20 cm apart (8 inches). They flower from December to March and grow well in large pots.
