If you are battling to maintain the beauty of your lawn, or if you are simply taking basic care of your lawn, it is imperative that you effectively and regularly get rid of weeds.
You know that weeds are unwanted, because of four major factors. First, they compete with the lawn, for the minerals and nutrients in the soil. Second, they compete for adequate sunlight. Third, they can be destructive to the lawn’s very existence and fourth, they are simply eyesores.
A good and well maintained lawn is characterized by the absence of unwanted weeds. That is why you should strive, to make sure you weed your lawn regularly. If that is your aim, then, you should bear in mind, some helpful guidelines, that would eradicate your problem over weeds. Here are some useful tips.
Mow your lawn frequently, or regularly. Doing so, will help maintain not just the beauty and density of the turf, but also help monitor the presence of unwanted weeds. Detecting any weeds, will give you the signal to do what you must do, to get rid of the problem.
Observe the one-third rule, when mowing your lawn. That means you shouldn’t cut more than one third of the turfs’ leaf blades, every mowing session. That way, you’ll make sure, the turf won’t get exclusive access to sunlight. Thus, any presence of weeds underneath the turf, will be eradicated, because you know even weeds need sunlight to exist.
Water and fertilize the lawn properly and appropriately. Moderation is the answer. Having too much water and fertilizer, or too little, will stress the turf, and there could be open areas on the lawn, where weeds can opportunistically grow.
Control any weeds you see, while they are still young, because, when the weeds grow older, they will be harder to contain. Use herbicides, that are recommended and tested by botanists, or experts, so you target-kill the weed and not the turf. Make sure you also observe safety measures, when applying and handling the herbicides. Herbicides are natural pesticides, that are formulated to kill unwanted plants. Therefore, the substance is toxic and should be handled with extra care.
If you want to try another measure, in controlling weeds, try doing the task manually. To do so, you should hand pull the weeds, individually. Doing so, would effectively and safely control unwanted weeds, within your lawn. However, this activity will require effort and time, on your part.
