Most people, even keen gardeners, regard lawn care as a tedious and a high maintenance chore. It seems t always require attention and takes considerable time and effort to always look freshly mown and presentable.
Well, don’t fret, because there are basic gardening and lawn care techniques, that you can start with and follow through on, as you begin your journey to a greener environment.
If you want a healthier lawn, here are some simple tips to start with:
1. Never over mow your lawn.
It is best to keep the grass up to 3 inches in height, to help with the weeds and to help, in retaining the strength of the roots, of the grass. This means, you should mow 3 times a month, or less and it will save you time and effort as well.
2. Always ensure the mower blades are sharp.
Replace and / or sharpen blunt mower blades, regularly. Dull blades aren’t good for lawn grass, because they cut unevenly and this allows diseases to form and harm your lawn.
3. Don’t Throw away the grass clippings.
Grass clippings contain nutrients, that can help keep the soil and the roots healthier.
4. Fertilize during the autumn, (or fall in the US).
Do this to enhance reserves in the grass roots and to help them get through the winter and also to give them a jump start in springtime.
5. Water your lawn early.
Water between 4 and 8 in the morning, for best results. This helps the grass to dry quicker under the sunlight.
6. Fertilizing.
Fertilizing and applying insecticides, to your lawn, should only be done when necessary. Sometimes, too much fertilizer can weaken the roots and cause damage. Too much insecticide, or herbicide, can even make pests and diseases more tolerant.
Now that you have a greener and healthier lawn, you should also give special attention to your garden, by following these simple tips.
1. If you have great soil, to start with, then there is no doubt, you’ll only need to fertilize it, every once in a while. Use a good fertilizer, to enhance the already healthy soil, in your garden. It is less hassle and lower maintenance.
2. Choose plants, that are low maintenance. If you are just starting a garden, this is a good way to start. As you become more familiar with the habit, you can incorporate other plants, that need more attention.
3. Group your plants accordingly. If you have both high and low maintenance plants, group them together, so you’ll know which group to attend to, during the day.
4. Mulch, to keep your plants and soil healthier. Mulching helps keep the soil and roots moist, which in turn lessens watering requirements and prevents weeds from growing.
5. Use ergonomic-friendly garden tools, to lessen your strain and reduce excess effort, while tending your garden.
Having all these tips in mind, you can be sure that your gardening and lawn care, will pay off.
