When starting a new plant from a leaf, or stem cutting, the cutting will be more likely to form roots and create a new plant, if a rooting hormone is used. While a commercial rooting hormone can be used, there are organic, homemade versions that work as well.

How To Keep Your Garden Patios Free Of Weeds
Most plants will remain healthier and stronger, if they are pruned occasionally. Trees will bear more fruit, if they are pruned and plants such as roses, will have more blossoms and not become ‘woody,’ if they are pruned correctly. Bushes and hedges can also benefit from pruning, as this can reduce, or eliminate the possibility of diseases and problems with pests.
One of the most important rules of creating a garden, is to ensure that you have the right plants, for the right place. There are many plants that will suffer, if they aren’t growing in conditions that are suited to them and by planting in these conditions, you will always be fighting a battle to have them looking their best, simply because they will always be struggling to survive.

How To Find The Right Plants For Your Garden
Plants consist of approximately 90% water and therefore it is essential, that they get enough water to survive. Gardening is all about balance and that applies to the amount of water your plants need, to stay healthy. Over watering can be as harmful as not giving them enough water. The soil, that the plants are growing in, is a big factor in the amount of water that you should be giving them.
If you give your plants excess water, or have poor drainage, you will run the risk of water logging them. This will cause the leaves to go a yellow, or brown colour and they will usually drop off. When plants start getting waterlogged, the leaves at the bottom of the plant will be affected first.
My Dad died on Monday morning the 4th February. This was the end to a long illness and many trips down to Durban to visit him in hospital. Things are not back to normal yet, so rather than let my blog suffer, I have asked a few other garden experts to contribute articles to my blog. This week, I will run articles by them. It is easy to test the pH of the soil in your garden with the use of a simple and inexpensive test kit. All you need to do with the test kit is take a sample of the soil and mix it with water and then compare the results in the sample to the colors on the chart. This will tell you whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.

One of the best soil conditioners you can get for your garden is seaweed. What makes seaweed even better for the garden is the fact that it doesn’t need to cost you anything if you are prepared to collect it when it gets washed up on the beach, or alternatively from the surface of the water when you are out in a boat.
