There are many beautiful plants, flowers and trees, that are indigenous to South Africa and some adapt very well to being grown in gardens around the world. Today, we look at one such variety, the Spekboom. The Spekboom (Portulacaria Afra) is commonly referred to as the Porkbush, or Elephant’s food. The literal translation, from Afrikaans, means the Bacon Tree.
Trees are very important to mankind on earth, as they purify the air. They supply us with many needs, such as fuel, building materials, pulp for paper and they also give us shade, shelter and beauty. Depending on the variety of the tree, they can also supply us with fruit and nuts.
There are many different types of plants that can be grown indoors and anyone wanting to pursue this hobby, is spoilt for choice. This article covers some of the flowering plants, that are common favourites in South Africa and surrounds.
Proteas are intriguing plants in more ways than I can describe. We took a brief look at them yesterday. They are a large family and South Africa’s national flower. It is a protected species and are even grown commercially. We will look at a few of the more common types of Protea, in this article.
Proteas are majestic in stature, intricate in detail and beautiful in flower. It is the most famous flower in South Africa and the national flower emblem. The most attractive species derive from the Cape and have common names, like Suikerbos. This even appears in a folksong, where they say (translated into English) “sugarbush I love you, sugarbush, I want you.”
