Latest News In Our Quest For Faster Internet Access

There have been several articles on our dilemma to get a faster and more stable internet connection and this matter has dragged on for a full 14 months! Six of these months were wasted by waiting for a Pietermaritzburg company to connect us. They had lied and stalled every day for a full 6 months and then I discovered they were lying. I met a new guy Steve, who seemed genuine and promised he could help. I remained a little skeptical, but in the last 2 weeks, since I first contacted him, things are really happening.

He contacted a crowd in Durban, who manufacture and install aerials and convinced them of the potential in the private market, particularly for those people living in the outlying areas, who had no other options. Steve has been to my house 5 times already and a representative from this company in Durban, by the name of Shaun, came to see me on a Saturday! That’s unheard of in South Africa. He must be keen! So, 5 stars to them, so far.

You might remember, that I had identified a hill, in our area, as a perfect site. This hill is the highest in the area and is situated in Umlaas Road, which is the highest point on the Comrades Marathon route, between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It stands to reason then, that this is the highest point from the coast, to somewhere around Mooi River and between Table Mountain (the small one on the way to Greytown) and Richmond. They were very impressed with this site and on Sunday, we ventured to the top. From there we were able to see for miles, in all directions and could even see some of the other well known aerial sites, such as Alverstone and World’ View.

The plan is now, to erect a proper repeater tower on my hill, soon to be called Derek’s Hill, to link up with other high sites and form a network in the area covering the coast to Ladysmith and Kokstad to Greytown. This is a huge area and it is good news for all living here.

By the use of radio waves, they will be able to supply a cheap, but effective, connection point in a house, or office. No phone line is necessary. They offer fast speeds, 24/7 connection, no capping and 98% uptime. In about 2 years, they will install newer technology, which will make this service truly wireless and portable, so in effect, a subscriber will be able to receive signal anywhere in Natal. At the same time, the other provinces will also be switching over, so the signal will be available just about anywhere in South Africa.

The next day was Sunday. The weather cleared a bit and visibility wasn’t too bad. Steve phoned and asked if it was convenient for me to accompany him up the hill, to take a good look, to take co-ordinates and to take some photographs. Who works on a Sunday? I readily agreed and we did what was necessary. The information was e-mailed through to Shaun and on Monday the company held a meeting. It was decided to press on with this installation. On Tuesday they held a planning meeting to calculate materials and equipment needed and to draw up their budgets.

Another meeting was planned for Wednesday to get clearance from ICASA and to arrange a power feed from Eskom.  A final meeting is planned for Thursday, with the farmer, to arrange the logistics, to get permission for the team to enter the farm and to sign a lease agreement. Then work commences. They reckon they can erect the tower in just 2 days and then another day to attach the equipment and tune it in.

The only delay could be caused by the weather and the fact that the concrete base needs time to set, before construction can be started. What good news! At last!

In the next fortnight I will have my connection and we will select a few other candidates to receive connections. We will test the service for a month and then it will be made available to other users. This is very exciting and this opens doors for rural dwellers who have had no alternative to the lousy Telkom dial up service.

Once the infrastructure is in place, I will name these guys and give contact details. So, if you struggle with dial up and have no option because you “live out of town”, this is very good news. And I feel proud that after persevering for a year, I have been instrumental in driving this service forward and of course it’s all because of Derek’s Hill.
