After all the pre-race warnings of water pollution and a possible change in starting venue, this year’s Dusi Canoe Marathon went off as per normal. History was made as Michael Mbanjwa is the first black paddler ever to win the Dusi Marathon.

The river was higher than normal, after the heavy rains and some rapids became treacherous. The normal thrills and spills were experienced by all and a few even had to be rescued.

The battle up front between the teams of Stott/Thompson, Dreyer/Mbanjwa and McGregor/Bruss was exciting to say the least. This year’s race was predominantly doubles canoes, but there were still plenty of singles too.

Winners Martin Dreyer and Michael Mbanjwa came in at 7 hrs ; 33 mins

Second were Ant Stott and Wayne Thompson in 7 hrs ; 36 mins

Third were Hank McGregor and Sven Bruss in 7 hrs ; 40 mins

Fourth were Deon Bruss and Nick Stubbs in 7 hrs : 51 mins

Fifth were Shaun Biggs and Mike Arthur in 7 hrs : 59 mins

Sixth were Greg Louw and Craig Turton in 7; 59

Seventh were Jaques Theron and Piers Cruickshanks in 8; 04

Eighth were Mike Harris and Johnathon Niemann in 8; 08

Ninth were Len Jenkins Jr and Cam Schoeman in 8; 11

Tenth were Trenton Lamble and Loveday Zondi in 8; 13

My son, Clinton and his partner, Glen Rawson did very well to come in 229th of a field of 1203, in 11 hours and 17 minutes.

Ladies winners were Alexa Lombard and Abbey Miedema in 27 th position in 8 hrs ; 46 mins.

Schoolboys Andrew Birkett and Ben Biggs came 15th in 8 hrs; 20 mins

Legend and master, Graeme Pope-Ellis and Rick Whitton came 25th in 8 hrs ; 41 mins. This was Graeme’s 44th consecutive Dusi!
