Results 7th Week Super 14 Rugby 2008

This was the seventh weekend in the 2008 season of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament and reaches the halfway mark in the competition. These are the results of the matches played in the seventh weekend, of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament, 2008.

The first match of the weekend, played on Friday morning, was between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes, in Wellington. The Crusaders have really been on top form and haven’t lost a game yet. They won this game too, but not by the huge margins as in their other wins. The final score was 20 – 13, after having been up by 17 – 3 at the break. The Hurricanes fought back in the second half, scoring ten of their 13 points. The Crusaders scored 2 tries and the Hurricanes managed 1. This keeps the Crusaders on top of the log, followed by the Sharks, who also haven’t lost a game yet, but have a game in hand.

The second match, also on Friday morning, was the Waratahs and Cheetahs, in Sydney. The Waratahs proved too good for the Cheetahs and after being up 20 – 7 at halftime, they went on to win by 23 – 19. Tries were 2 to the Waratahs and 3 to the cheetahs.

The last match on Friday was the game between the Western Force and the Stormers, played in Perth. Well, the Stormers seem to have gelled after a terrible start to their Super 14 matches and took a convincing win over the Force, by 32 – 16. At the break, the Stormers were already ahead 20 – 11. They scored 4 tries to grab the bonus point and the Force scored 2 tries.

The next match, on Saturday morning, saw the Chiefs face the Highlanders in Hamilton. I’m not sure if I should say the Chiefs were good on the day, or that the luckless Highlanders, in one of their worst seasons, were worse, but on the day, they werte not up to the challenge and lost to the Chiefs by 39 – 24. The Chiefs scored 6 tries, but the Highlanders managed 4, so picked up a bonus point. The Chiefs had been ahead at the break, by 22 – 12.

The next Saturday match, was between the Blues and the Bulls. The venue was Auckland. The Blues have had a pretty good start to the Super 14 season this year, while the defending champs have had a disastrous time. This was a close game and from being up 10 – 7, at halftime, the Blues went on to win by 23 – 21. The Blues managed only 2 tries and the Bulls 3.

Next up, the last for Saturday evening, was the Sharks and the Reds, in Durban. These two teams are old rivals and several times before, the Sharks have been beaten by them. The Sharks were far superior this time and on the attack most of the game. I lost count, but at least 4 try scoring opportunities were lost by the Sharks. They had tries disallowed, but even so, they emerged convincing winners by 22 – 10. They had been drawn at 10 points apiece at the break. The Sharks scored 3 tries to 1 by the reds. My concern with the Sharks, over the years, is their repeated failure to amass bonus points. They play well, they win, but those bonus points seem to elude them.

The Brumbies and the Lions had byes this weekend.

So, after the seventh week of the competition the halfway log looks like this. Total score followed by games played.

Crusaders 33/7, Sharks 25/6, Blues 24/7, Hurricanes 19/6, Force 19/7, Stormers 18/7, Chiefs 18/7, Waratahs 17/6, Brumbies 16/6, Reds 12/7, Bulls 9/7, Lions 7/6, Cheetahs 6/7, Highlanders 5/6.
