This was the ninth weekend in the 2008 season of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament which is now in the second half of the competition. These are the results of the matches played on the ninth weekend, of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament, 2008.
The first match of the weekend, played on Friday morning, and in fact, the only Friday match, was between the Highlanders and the Sharks, in Dunedin. The Sharks were caught napping, but after being down 17- 11 at the break, they fought back to win by 19 – 17. Each team scored 2 tries.
The second match, on Saturday morning, was the Crusaders and the Lions, in Christchurch. After a very low scoring first half, the Lions were up 6 – 3 at the break, but the Crusaders showed how good they are with a convincing second half and won the match by 31 – 6. The Crusaders scored 4 tries, for the bonus point and the Lions never managed a try at all.
The second Saturday match was the game between the Blues and the Brumbies, played in Auckland. The Blues were among the top 3 teams earlier on in this tournament and the Brumbies were struggling. It never seemed that way on the day, with the Brumbies beating the Blues by 16 – 11. The Brumbies had been ahead at the break, by 10 – 3. Each team only managed 1 try.
The next match, early Saturday afternoon, saw the Western Force face the Waratahs, in Perth. The Waratahs had been battling, but found direction, with a win over the Force, by 17 – 12, after having been very close at 10 – 9 at halftime. The Force were unable to score any tries, but the Waratahs scored 2.
The next Saturday afternoon match, was between the Stormers and the Cheetahs. The venue was Cape Town. Halftime saw the Stormers up by 24 – 3 and they held on to the lead, winning by 34 – 22. The Stormers scored 5 tries and the Cheetahs got 3 tries.
Next up, the last game of the weekend, late on Saturday afternoon, was the Bulls and the Hurricanes, in Pretoria. The defending champions looked anything but that, with their own supporters leaving the stadium early after a disappointing display. After the Hurricanes having been ahead at the break, by 28 – 10, they pulled out the stops in the second half, to thrash the Bulls, by 50 – 22. The Hurricanes ran in 7 tries while the Bulls could only manage 3.
