This was the tenth weekend in the 2008 season of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament which is now well into the second half of the competition. These are the results of the matches played on the tenth weekend, of the Super 14 Rugby Tournament, 2008.
The first match of the weekend, played on Friday morning, was between the Chiefs and the Crusaders, in Hamilton. The Chiefs seem to have found their form lately, but it still came as a surprise, when they thumped the “unstoppable” Crusaders, who had not lost a game yet. The Chiefs were ahead by 18 – 0 at halftime and won the game by 18 – 5. The Chiefs scored 2 tries, to 1 by the Crusaders, who still cling to top spot on the log.
The second match, later on Friday morning, was the Reds and the Force, in Brisbane. I was surprised by this result too. The Reds beat the Force by29 – 12, after a halftime lead of only 13 – 12. The Reds ran in 3 tries, while the Force failed to dot down.
The third match, and the first on Saturday, was the game between the Waratahs and the Lions, played in Sydney. The Waratahs found their form, although it took them until the second half to get any points on the board. They thumped the Lions 26 – 3, after a halftime score of 0 – 0. The Waratahs scored 4 tries to pick up the bonus point.
The next match, on Saturday morning, saw the Brumbies face the Sharks, in Canberra.
The Sharks definitely looked the better team in the first half and at halftime they were 18 – 7 ahead. Bad luck and a terrible referee saw them repeatedly penalized for doubtful infringements and this let the Brumbies regroup and settle down. The final score was 27 – 21 to the Brumbies. This is the first loss by the Sharks and the refereeing, by Bryce Lawrence will be the talking point for some time.
The next Saturday match, in the afternoon, was between the Bulls and the Highlanders. The venue was Pretoria. Although the luckless Highlanders could not have been considered as strong opposition, the Bulls found their missing form and looked much better. After leading by 28 – 3 at the break, they went on to win by 47 – 17, scoring 6 tries, to only 2 by the Highlanders.
Next up, the last game of the weekend, late on Saturday afternoon, was the Stormers and the Hurricanes, in Cape Town. The Stormers have also found their form and impressed as the stronger team. After being up by 10 – 0, at the break, they went on to win by 20 – 12. Both teams scored 2 tries each.
The Blues and the Cheetahs had byes this weekend.
So, after the tenth week of the competition, the log looks like this. Total points, followed by games played.
Crusaders 38/9, Sharks 32/9, Waratahs 31/9, Stormers 27/9, Chiefs 27/9, Hurricanes 26/9, Blues 25/9, Brumbies 24/9, Force 24/10, Reds 16/9, Bulls 15/10, Cheetahs 11/9, Highlanders 10/9, Lions 7/9.
