How to Profit from Distributing Public Domain Works

What are Public Domain and Shareware products? Well, Public Domain products are not copyrighted by the authors, or producers. Public Domain products are written by authors who place their works in the public domain and allowed them to be copied and distributed freely, by anyone, with few, or no restrictions. Normally the original copyrights have expired.

Copyrighted software and scripts are products that are still registered by their authors and afforded protection, like a patent. If a user likes the software enough to continue using it, the user is required to register the software with the author, for a fee, usually from $5 to about $100. This registration fee provides the user with extra benefits like free updates, newer versions, printed manuals, technical support and other available software, etc.

Shareware software may be copied and distributed freely by anyone, with few, or no restrictions and without payment to the author. Most developers list their distribution restrictions, if any, usually in a “readme” file on their software. Be sure to check these files for any registration procedures.

Public Domain products are available from a number of directory services and archives, but beware – this has become big business and is not nearly as easy to find and to access, as it once was.

Search engines love fresh content on websites, particularly if it is informative and authoritive. So many people are trying to produce this content on their sites, or for sale, without having to sit down and write it themselves. If you can find articles, manuscripts, poetry, reports, books, letters, software, tools and things in the Public Domain, you can make considerable profits by selling them.

Books and lengthier works can be broken down, into shorter articles and reports. People are crying out for new articles and content. Used correctly, this is a very lucrative market and as so much of the Public Domain works are free, the profits are extraordinary.

Some clever people realized this potential and started exploiting the Public Domain a while back and now run big profitable businesses. Imagine the possibilities! You don’t need to do anything else. You don’t need to get involved in all the technical parts of online business. All you need to do, is concentrate fulltime on finding suitable materials in the Public Domain. Then, either as original works, or edited in our own personal style, or re-packaged as smaller reports and articles, you sell to a huge, hungry market.

It is easy to advertise and sell these products. You can use forums, directories, online advertising, offline advertising, a website, Google ads, PPC, or even submit them to marketplaces like Clickbank and PayDotCom. There is no shortage of willing customers.

Imagine for example, you find several books on gardening. They cost you nothing, but the time to search and find. You edit and re-package them as hundreds of articles. Say, you charge 25c each, that’s $25 per hundred. Let’s reduce that figure and say you sell 300 gardening articles for $17. You sell only 100 packs. That’s $1700 profit, for only a couple of hours worked.

Not bad. Now you do this every day and use other niches as well. Imagine if you could find enough material each day to make a pack of 300 articles. If all goes according to plan, you could make as much as 30 packs at $17 and sell 100 of each. That would give you a staggering $51000 for a months work.

After the first months work, you could still get more sales and have a residual income and of course you can sell the entire works as books. Then combine a couple of chapters into reports. The potential is really huge. And of course you could be really innovative and stick a bio-box at the end of each article with your website link and maybe an affiliate sales link too. Now, whoever reads the articles might click the links. This would become viral and spread your links all over the ‘net.

You probably wonder why I spoke about the Shareware. Well, there are some great tools and software aids available for free. Nothing too fancy, but some simple tools that work. You can’t sell these, but why not give them away with your packs, to sweeten the deal? An article pack could include a keyword tool, an editor, or something similar.

The trouble is, this stuff is quite hard to find.  Now imagine you had some automated software to search, find and alert you. Sound too fanciful? Not really. Take the long hours and hard work out of searching the Public Domain, by using automated software. Get the Domain Prowler here: http://dersalsites.com/.pdprowler/
